It is also crucial to separate infectious patients after triage. The specific criteria (e.g. smear and culture status) for separating
patients will depend on the local settings and patient population. In particular, patients living with HIV or with strong clinical
evidence of HIV infection, or with other forms of immunosuppression, should be physically separated from those with suspected or confirmed infectious TB. Patients with culture-positive drug-resistant TB – especially MDR and XDR-TB – or people suspected of having drug-resistant TB should be separated (preferably according to the drug resistance profile) or
isolated from other patients, including other TB patients.
